Few materials stop people in their tracks like a wall of backlit onyx. When light passes through the stone, its bands and veins glow from within, turning a bar, lobby or bathroom into a centrepiece. Getting that glow right depends on four choices: the onyx colour, the slab thickness, the backing and the lighting behind it.
As a factory-direct onyx supplier since 2010, we help importers, fabricators and designers plan backlit projects every month. This guide walks through each choice in plain terms.
What Is Backlit Onyx?
Backlit onyx is onyx stone installed with a light source behind it. Unlike marble or granite, onyx is translucent, so light travels through it and shows off the natural pattern. If you are still comparing stones, see our guide to onyx vs marble.
The same slab looks completely different lit and unlit. Unlit, it shows its surface colour; lit, the darker bands become outlines and the lighter areas glow. Always ask your supplier to show you the actual slab on a light table before you buy.
Choosing the Best Onyx Colour for Backlighting
- Honey onyx: warm amber and gold glow; the most popular choice for bars, restaurants and hotel lobbies. Read more in our honey onyx guide.
- White onyx: soft, even white light; ideal for modern interiors, spas and bathrooms.
- Green onyx: rich green with bright veins; dramatic for reception desks and statement walls.
- Pink and multi-colour onyx: playful, warm tones for boutique retail, lounges and residential features.
Lighter colours let more light through and glow brighter. Darker and heavily banded onyx gives more contrast but a dimmer glow, so it needs stronger lighting.
Slab Thickness and Backing
Thickness controls how much light passes through. Thinner stone glows more but is more fragile.
- Standard slabs (around 20 mm / 3/4 inch): the most common choice for walls and bar fronts; good strength with a clear glow.
- Thinner panels (around 10–12 mm): brighter glow and lighter weight, but they need a reinforcing backing.
- Thicker slabs (30 mm and up): used for countertops and tabletops; they need stronger lighting to glow evenly.
Because onyx is brittle, most backlit panels are reinforced. Laminating the back with clear glass or clear resin keeps the most light. A fibreglass mesh adds strength at a small cost in brightness. If you choose lightweight honeycomb backing, check that it is a translucent type, or it will block the light.
How to Light Onyx: LED Options
LED lighting is the standard for backlit onyx. It runs cool, uses little power and lasts for years.
- LED light panels or sheets: give the most even light with no hot spots; best for large walls.
- LED strips in a grid: flexible and cost-effective; space the strips evenly and add a diffuser sheet to avoid visible lines.
- Colour temperature: warm white (around 2700–3000 K) brings out honey and amber tones; neutral to cool white (around 4000–6500 K) suits white and green onyx.
- RGB and dimmable LEDs: let you change colour or brightness for bars, hospitality and events.
Leave a gap between the lights and the stone, commonly around 5–15 cm (2–6 inches), so the light spreads evenly. Test the spacing with your actual slab before final installation.
Where to Use Backlit Onyx
- Feature and lobby walls: book-matched panels create a mirrored, symmetrical pattern.
- Bar fronts and bar tops: a signature look for restaurants, hotels and home bars.
- Reception desks and counters: a strong first impression for offices, clinics and showrooms.
- Bathroom vanities and shower walls: a soft glow for luxury bathrooms and spas.
- Ceilings, columns and stair risers: subtle light built into architecture.
- Lamps, tabletops and decor: smaller onyx pieces, such as our patchwork green onyx side table lamp, bring the same glow into any room.
Installation Tips
- Plan the layout first. Lay out and photograph slabs on a light table, and number them before cutting.
- Book-match for walls. Mirrored panels from the same block give the most dramatic result.
- Allow access to the lights. Use removable panels or a service gap so LEDs can be maintained.
- Ventilate the cavity. LEDs are cool, but drivers still need airflow.
- Use an experienced fabricator. Onyx cuts and chips differently from marble and granite.
Care and Maintenance
- Seal the face of the onyx after installation and reseal periodically.
- Clean with a soft cloth and a pH-neutral stone cleaner; avoid vinegar, lemon and bleach.
- On bar tops and counters, use coasters and trays to prevent etching and scratches.
- Dust the light cavity during routine maintenance so the glow stays even.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can all onyx be backlit?
Most onyx is translucent enough to backlight, but translucency varies by colour, block and thickness. Lighter onyx such as honey and white glows the most. Always test the actual slab on a light table.
What thickness of onyx is best for backlighting?
Around 20 mm (3/4 inch) is the standard for walls and bar fronts. Thinner panels of about 10–12 mm glow brighter but need a glass, resin or mesh backing for strength.
Which onyx colour glows best when backlit?
Honey onyx gives a warm amber glow and white onyx gives a soft, even white light. Both are brighter than darker green or heavily banded onyx.
What lights are used behind onyx?
LED panels or LED strips with a diffuser. They run cool, use little power and give even light without damaging the stone.
How far should LEDs be from the onyx?
A gap of roughly 5–15 cm (2–6 inches) is common. The right distance depends on the LED type and slab, so test before final installation.
Is backlit onyx suitable for a bar top?
Yes, it is one of the most popular uses. Seal the surface and use coasters, because onyx is softer than granite and can etch from drinks.
Do you supply backlit onyx to the USA and Australia?
Yes. Minerals Route supplies onyx slabs, panels and finished pieces wholesale and ships to the USA, Australia and worldwide.
